Be Climate Clever |
 |
|
Climate change is a fact, not a theory. It is caused by greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide. They act like a blanket, trapping the heat as it leaves the earth and sending some of it back, making the earth warmer overall.
There are significant commitments with global implications. The climate choices we make at home are just as important. When we all work together, we really can make a difference.

Follow the 3R rule - (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) to make the most of your recycling efforts:
Reduce - make recycle friendly choices so you have less waste.
Reuse - use the same item more than once, rather than disposing
Recycle - buy products made from recycled materials.

Plastic Plant Pot Recycling |
|
Bunnings has recently launched a plastic plant pot recycling pilot in 23 metropolitan stores across Western Australia.
|
 |
|
From April 2008 customers can drop their old plastic pots in designated collection bins which are located near the nursery entrance of each store.
The recovered Polypropylene (PP) material will be collected and reprocessed by SITA for reuse in the manufacture of new pots and other plastic products. A product made from recycled PP conserves natural resources, reduces the energy consumed in its manufacture and therefore reduces greenhouse gas emissions.
More than 100 million plastic plant pots are discarded each year in WA landfill, which contributes approximately 8000 tonnes of additional waste. During the three month trial Bunnings hopes to recycle more than 120 tonnes of plastic plant pots that would otherwise have ended up as landfill.

|
The trial is supported by SITA Environmental Solutions, the Department of Conservation & Environment and the National Packaging Covenant.

Power Tool and Battery Recycling |
|
In 2008 Bunnings conducted a three month trial recycling trial for power tools and rechargeable batteries in the Northland,
Box Hill, Frankston, Shepparton and Sunshine Warehouse stores.

Eligible products included rechargeable power tools, electric (cord) hand power tools and rechargeable power tool batteries consisting of Nickel Cadmium, Nickel Metal Hydride and Lithium Ion.
The power tools had their non metallic components removed and shredded to allow recovery and recycling of metals. They were then recycled into the manufacture of new products.
Batteries were packed and shipped to approved battery recycling facilities and dismantled into hazardous or recyclable materials.
The trial concluded on May 31, 2008 and final results are now being collated.

Sustainability |
Bunnings recycling goal is to focus on how we can improve the way we reduce, reuse and recycle throughout our business and
operations. |
 |
|
Some of our achievements and current objectives include:
· Developed “Sustainable Packaging” to reduce the impact of
packaging waste
· We continue to reuse and recycle cardboard in all our stores
· The web and e-newsletters are used as communication to reduce the
amount of paper we waste
· We are upgrading 100,000 pallets with softwood plantation pines to
recycle into mulch
· We have installed over 60 working water tanks to use in our nursery
· Seven of our sites currently reuse and recycle storm water run-off
from the nursery and we are looking into expanding this
· Exploring the opportunity to trial large underground storm water
tanks in our stores
